Antique Chinese heavily carved wedding cabinet
An exquisite antique four-doorm heavily carved Chinese wedding cabinet. It has very deep carving at least one inch deep, with beautiful workmanship which is a sign of the very high value of this piece. Completely perfect and intricate carving which despite its age is un-ravaged by time. It would have been owned by a very wealthy family. It is extremely rare to find this quality in such very good condition. It comes from the town of Dongwang in Zhekjiang Province, and dates from the mid to late 19th Century. It is made from mulberry and camphor woods.
Originally Chinese cabinets like this would have been used to store clothing and would have been presented to the couple full od silks and brocades like our trousseaubut is equally useful as a display cabinet for Chinese ceramics or Chinese bowls and dishes.
Many people are concerned about the dust trap that such deep carving can be, but the clever Chinese have always had the answer. A good flick with a feather duster will remove all the dust in an instant, and it is what we use here at Zitan.
