Uncarved barbers stool
Antique Chinese barbers stool. These are wonderful talking pieces.
This small stool was owned by a barber and carried to work suspended from a bamboo pole. The small drawers contained brushes, combs, razors and the other tools of his trade. He would carry the stool and stand on a pavement until a customer arrived. The customer sat on the stool, to have his hair cut, his pigtail oiled, or his face shaved. When finished he put the money in the slot in the top of the box.
It is created in Chinese pine and was made in the late 19th century in Ningbo. It is quite plain and uncarved but the wood has a glorious sheen.
