Antique Chinese Lacquered Cabinet
Antique Chinese cabinet from Anhui/Zhekjiang in China. It was made in the mid to late 19th Century. This unusual piece can be opened from both sides and was likely to have been used as a room divider, giving access to the cabinet from both sides. The sections at the back slide to open. At a time when several generations of a family lived together then privacy was important.
At the top and bottom are carved floral panels with red and gold lacquer. The main doors are hinged and concertina when they open and the interior has 3 drawers. There is a fixed high shelf. The open fretwork doors have carved decorative panels in gold lacquer depicting flowers and vases. It is becoming increasingly hard to find items of the quality of this lovely piece.
This antique Chinese cabinet has vast storage potential. It will easily accomodate a large TV and as the back opens all the wiring is unseen down the back. The doors concertina so there is completely unrestricted viewing for everyone. It would make an ideal drinks cabinet, display cabinet for Chinese ceramics and Chinese bowls or any other collections of beautiful items you may have.
